When do you need the KDE exam?

The Cantonal German Exam exactly covers the levels required by the Canton of Zurich (Written A2 / Oral B1). It is necessary if you:

  1. Need a recognized certificate for regular naturalization.
  2. Must provide proof of language proficiency for a C permanent residence permit or B residence permit.
  3. Are applying for a taxi license in the Canton of Zurich (B1 oral level is required).

 

KDE exam procedure

The exam assesses your German skills in two sections.

1. Written part (90 minutes)

  • Areas: Reading and Writing.
  • Level: A2.
  • Format: Group exam.

2. Oral part (15 minutes)

  • Areas: Listening and Speaking.
  • Level: B1.
  • Format: Paired exam (you speak with another participant).

Important: Please bring a valid ID on the exam day. Tools such as dictionaries or smartphones are not allowed during the exam.
